40 Years, 40 Stories
Stephanie Whyte, Partner
Stephanie’s McLeod Law story begins with a parade. Namely the one she got stuck in on her way to her interview. Before that, her path had other surprises. She’d planned to do a master’s in psychology, but a counseling course prerequisite made it clear that she was, in her words, “wholly unsuited” to counseling. So she turned to law — after an art history professor suggested it.
Stephanie's focus is litigation, foreclosures and the enforcement side of condo law. Boasting Calgary’s largest condominium law department, McLeod Law’s group has worked with most of the city’s condo corporations, so Stephanie understands the intricacies of organizations’ different bylaws.
Working in McLeod’s condominium law department has other benefits. “Because there’s such demand, and we have a big team, lawyers are able to focus on governance or enforcement,” Stephanie explains. “In other firms, one person typically does both.” This deeper, more distributed knowledge base means Stephanie has more resources at her fingertips. If she doesn’t have the answer, she knows someone else on the team will.
Stephanie also has a foot in personal injury, which is where she’s experienced her career highlight: winning her largest settlement ever, in 2019. “He was a wonderful client who suffered devastating injury,” she recalls. “That settlement means he can live a better life.”
