40 Years, 40 Stories
Spencer Chimuk, Associate
Spencer already had a master’s degree in English when his older brother, a lawyer, challenged Spencer to take the LSAT and beat him. It was a challenge this self-described “big nerd” couldn’t resist. Years later, they are both at McLeod Law.
As a litigator, Spencer considers himself a practical problem-solver. “The practice of law doesn’t exist in a bubble in some classroom or courtroom,” he says. “I solve my clients’ problems by dealing with the practicalities.” This means getting to a case’s underlying issues. “Once you identify the pressure points, you can find the resolution.” His goal is to get his clients back to what they do best, as cost effectively and efficiently as possible.
McLeod is a proud partner of Entrepreneurs’ Organization Calgary, and, through its Grow program, Spencer has the pleasure of working with a variety of clients, from sole proprietorships to 500-employee companies. In one particularly satisfying case, he helped an executive who’d been offered a $50,000 severance secure a package closer to $200,000.
When COVID hit, Spencer and his wife were in Argentina, while his parents took care of their two young daughters in Calgary. Needless to say, it was a scramble to get back. Now Spencer relishes his time with the girls even more. “Being a dad is the funnest thing I do.”
In celebration of our milestone anniversary, 40 Years 40 Stories celebrates the diverse expertise, personalities and points of view that have helped our firm grow with the Calgary community since 1980.
